WHERE TO FIND THE HOPE WE NEED?

WHERE TO FIND THE HOPE WE NEED?

Tagalog: Saan makikita ang pag-asang kailangan?

picture taken from google

BIBLE PASSAGE: John 14:16-19/ Romans 15:13/ Ephesians 1:13/

Lesson Aim:

·         To assure eternal life to those who accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior through the Bible

·         To believe of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit

·         To realize that the only hope is found in Jesus Christ

Prayer Time: (Ask their prayer requests)

Lesson Activity:

Each member will choose A PICTURE where people mostly find hope or what they think is the great source of hope. Explain briefly why they chose that picture.

INTRODUCTION:

(Use any introductions that fit on this topic)

Is there a time you feel helpless or down? What are the possible reasons?

We have witnessed by ourselves what has happened when COVID-19 strikes in the end of 2019 and boomed in 2021.

-      We can’t fully make plans because of pandemic- feeling controlled.

-      Low economy

-      Travel restrictions

-      No big parties

-      Unemployment

-      Virus spreads

In addition to these, we have our own personal problems too: family, relationship, yourself & others. Personally, I realized that the idea of impossible things you might think won’t happen it will surely happen if God allows. Life is not in our hands.

Ask: We have recent news also that even the most beautiful woman in America lived with no hope. She killed herself by throwing herself from the high floors of the building where she lived. Where to find hope we need?

 LESSON PROPER:

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE ONE WHO GIVES POWER.

Question: What if the Holy Spirit is not in us?

Note: make sure the Holy Spirit is in us.

Acts 19:1-2 says,

HOW TO HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT IN US?

(Remind them of what they’ve done last time of accepting Jesus Christ into their hearts? Ask them their assurance based from the Bible)

Acts 2:38

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Read and explain Ephesians 1:13

Read and explain John 14:1-2, 16-19

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SUPERNATURAL THINGS GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN DO?

1)   The Holy Spirit is our Great Comforter (John 16:7)

When you are feeling powerless or tired or like your failing at life, you can have confidence as a believer that you're not alone. You can start each day knowing the Holy Spirit is there to help you. He is the power that sustains, energizes, and keeps you on a holy path. Always pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help and comfort you.

2)   The Holy Spirit Sanctifies You (1 Corinthians 6:11)

“Sanctified” means to be set apart as sacred. Essentially, it’s the purification of sin and spiritually maturing to become more Christlike. This is an important process for a believer--leaving behind the old and becoming a new person. But it’s a daily process, and it takes time.

The Holy Spirit wants to help you in this process of sanctification: to die to your old self and be all that God created you to be; to be free from the entanglement of sin and live victoriously.

3)   He Helps You to Do the Father’s will (Acts 8:29)

Throughout the New Testament we see the Holy Spirit direct people to do the will of God. He helps us tune into the voice of the Father and, in faith, do what we believe He is calling us to. Ask the Spirit to show you what the Father’s will would be for you today and ask Him to empower you to carry it out!

4)   The Holy Spirit Gifts You for the Ministry (1 Corinthians 12:4-11)

The Holy Spirit imparts to believers gifts that are needed in the Church. Nobody receives all gifts but they are distributed among the Body of Christ, each person receiving different gifts. The gift(s) that you receive will empower you for the calling God has placed on your life. Embrace what God has put inside of you and be His instrument for Kingdom purpose!

5)   The Holy Spirit Gives Hope (Romans 15:13)

Hope as God hopes. This is only possible in abundance through the power of the Holy Spirit. And it’s hope that carries people through all trials and tribulations. Hope is fuel for the soul. Tap into this by His power and experience peace among your surroundings.

KEY VERSE

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

EPHESIANS 1:13-14

INTRODUCTION:

At the beginning of creation, man was at one with God, walking in His Spirit.  After the fall of Adam and Eve, man’s nature reflected the sin that entered the world. We continue to experience the results of that sin and flesh nature in our society. I remember yesterday when I went to wet market, there were two “kumares” talking and the first woman said, “Oh, wow your baby is light-skinned, she didn’t get from yours, how come?” The second woman said, “You know she was conceived with ‘white smoke’ (talking about smoke of the cigarette) that was she got it” and they both laughed. I just whispered to myself why this woman doesn’t know the effect of smoke to her baby. She still was smoking while carrying her. People in the world can recognize what is wrong and what is not.

Let me ask some of the changes happen to you when you accepted Christ into your hearts? (Wait for audience reply and short testimony)

From your given short testimonies, we can see the changes happened in your inner self. How about when a person doesn’t experience any changes? That’s the big problem. In Romans 8:9 says,

“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”

Let’s check ourselves. Bible says in Ephesians 1:13-14

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Let’s read again Galatians 5:22- 23 - 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Before I have confusion between works of the Holy Spirit and Fruit of the Holy Spirit. Let me share from the lesson of Firstbaptist.com. There is a big difference between works and fruit. Work is something you do while fruit is the result an action. In verses 19-21, Paul spoke of the works of the flesh. These works are desires/impulses of the flesh that are sinful. Those who are born again (John 3:3) have the Spirit of God within them. We must not confuse the Fruit of the Spirit with the Gifts from the Spirit. Spiritual Gifts are given by God “for the common good” (1 Cor 12:7). Romans 12:6 tells us that we each have “gifts that differ according to the grace given to us.” Spiritual gifts are given by God and they vary amongst His children. Some Christians are gifted teachers and/or preachers. Some Christians are especially gifted in service or exhortation or discernment. The Fruit of the Spirit is similar but different than Spiritual Gifts. Whereas, different Christians are gifted differently, every Christian has the Fruit of the Spirit. It is called “Fruit” because it is the result of the action that is taken by God in giving us the Holy Spirit. Therefore, number one point is…

LESSON OUTLINE:

1.  ONLY THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN PRODUCE HIS FRUIT.

We cannot produce the fruit of the holy spirit in our life. Only the Holy Spirit can produce it. We notice ourselves that people in the world strive to be good to inherit eternal life and some people say “ang bait niya  talaga or he’s  really good.” But no matter how good a person is in the eyes of men, people are sinful. Many people may say…I’m not a murderer! I’m not an adulterer! I never delved into witchcraft! Do you realize that Jesus said that if you hate someone that you’ve already planned murder in your heart? Do you realize that lusting doesn’t have to be over another person’s spouse, that it can be for more and more money? Have you realized that by reading the Horoscopes and following the star charts and believing in the works of Horoscopes that you are delving into the realm of witchcraft and the occult? Even certain games have elements of evil, especially video games.

So, what’s the point here? Well, the point is not to tell you all what you’re doing wrong. It is to show you that when Jesus comes into your heart and the Holy Spirit takes up residence in you, the sour fruit of your soul becomes sweet; the rotten fruit of your spirit becomes fresh again; the unattractive fruit turns beautiful, and the dead fruit is resurrected to new life! ONLY THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN PRODUCE HIS FRUIT.

Jesus said that fruit identifies plants and people. “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” (Matthew 7:20) The Bible clearly states, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) When the Holy Spirit regenerates a person, he makes definite changes in his life. He also begins producing His fruit. Lack of the fruit of the Spirit may indicate lack of true salvation. Again Warren Wiersbe points out, “It is possible for the old nature to counterfeit some of the fruit of the Spirit, but the flesh can never produce the fruit of the Spirit.” (Ibid. 1:720) When the Holy Spirit produces the fruit, He gets all the glory.

The Holy Spirit within us makes life real; life comes alive. When we have accepted Jesus as our Savior and Redeemer, Holy Spirit indwells in us. The Holy Spirit is the evidence of true salvation. Romans 8:16 says,

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:”

When the Holy Spirit takes over, we begin to grow. The Holy Spirit becomes our power source behind this growth so that eventually it will become evident.

The Holy Spirit is the divine enabler who produces growth in us. Every time we try to grow independently of God, we are working against Him. Many of us spend much of our time shutting God out. We are trying to produce those fruits on our own. However, God does not need our help to grow us.

2.  CHRISTIANS HAVE TWO NATURES WITHIN.

Christians have two natures within; the old nature known as the flesh and the new nature governed by the indwelling Holy Spirit. These natures pull us in opposite directions. The flesh pulls us into sin. The Spirit pulls us to righteousness. If we follow the Spirit’s leading, we will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. He will keep us from sin.  The fruit of the Spirit is opposite of the works of the flesh. Galatians 5:19-21 say,

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Both natures reside in every believer, causing a constant internal war between flesh and Spirit. In Galatians 5:16-17 gives us the strategy of how these two natures - flesh and Spirit – can co-exist.

16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Apostle Paul doesn’t call us to stop the desires of the flesh so we can walk in the Spirit. Rather, he is saying that walking in the Spirit will cause God’s will to override the desires of the flesh.

3.  THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FRUIT

In our text, the fruit that Holy Spirit produces in a Christian’s life has nine parts. These are not called “fruits” but “fruit,” perhaps because they grow together as a cluster of grapes. They are all of equal importance. If one is missing, the fruit is incomplete. The fruit appears to be listed in three categories.

a)   The first three are habits of the mind

·          Love (agape)
This love is a sacrificial choice to meet the needs of another expecting nothing in return. It is motivated by the Holy Spirit, not by feeling or emotion. Christians are commanded to love (agape), but they cannot do it without the help of the Holy Spirit.

·         Joy
Constable calls this “deep seated gladness regardless of circumstances.” It is a deep and abiding inner rejoicing. This joy is impossible apart from the Holy Spirit’s aid.

·         Peace
Peace is an inner rest or quietness even in the face of bad circumstances.
This quality is a fruit of the Spirit and cannot be understood by unbelievers. “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Php 4:7)

b)   The next three are attitudes toward others

·         Longsuffering
Longsuffering is patience, endurance, constancy, steadfastness, slowness in avenging wrongs. God champions this quality (Ps 86:15). Kenneth Wuest describes it as, “Patient endurance of wrong under ill-treatment, without anger or thought of revenge.” (Word Studies, Galatians, p. 160)

·         Gentleness
In the KJV this word is translated, goodness 4, kindness 4, good 1, gentleness. It portrays the idea of moral goodness, integrity, or kindness. Albert Barnes defines it as “gentleness of manner, of temper, and of spirit.” Maintaining a gentle manner of kindness when aggravated requires the Holy Spirit’s enabling.

·         Goodness
This quality describes active goodness or virtue. It is the quality of a person who is ruled by and aims at what is good (Wuest). Goodness is the fruit of the Spirit during temptation to be bad or when reaching out to others that not deserve it.

c)   The last three are graces that guide conduct

These are general or public disposition of God’s presence. These attribute is special as it tends to interact with a larger number, group or set.

·         Faith
Most commentators identify this fruit as fidelity or faithfulness rather than an act of faith. Truly, we need the Holy Spirit’s aid to be faithful in our stand for Christ and in our character. It may simply mean confidence in God and in all his promises even when circumstances turn against us.

·         Meekness (controlled power)
Eadie states, “The meek man bears himself mildly – submissively – in all things, ‘like a weaned child’; neither arraigns God, nor avenges himself on man.”  Meekness is submissiveness to God and tenderness toward others under your authority.

·         Temperance (controlled passions)
This word speaks of self-control. It is the holding in of one’s passions and appetites. (Eadie)
We cannot master our fleshly desires without the aid of the Holy Spirit.

CONCLUSION:

Go through the list of the Spirit’s fruit again and honestly ask yourself which ones are often present. (Read list). If any are missing, we must yield more to the Spirit.

We would all agree that we need every part of the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. The fact that fruit is often lacking, is because we are not cooperating with the Holy Spirit as we should. Only He can produce this fruit, but we must walk in the Spirit by proving or testing all that we do and saying no to all that fails the test. Every waking moment, we must be submitted to his leading.

If you have not been consciously submitting every thought, activity, word, and attitude to the Holy Spirit’s evaluation, you need to seek his forgiveness and begin tonight.

MEMORY VERSE

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

GALATIANS 5:22-23

  INTRODUCTION:

Let’s ask our seatmate today, “What have you been up to?” We know that these past weeks our lesson is all about the fruit of the spirit and if we ask that question at this moment, it means how’s your spiritual. Did we face struggle within the past week? Did the old nature become evident?

Last Friday I heard a commotion from a neighbor. They had a great which caused the dogs kept on barking. We know how argument happens: There are cussing, hurting words, bad words that would literally hurt somebody’s feelings. I can say that based from their conversations, they’re not Christians. Imagine if those words come from the mouth of Christians. I had also seen Christian families went into fight but the difference is the Holy is there trying to control your emotions and lead you to confess and ask for forgiveness. We know the reality of life in this world; there’s no peacefulness unless your family has connection to the church that will be reminded by God’s words through sermon and bible lessons in Sunday School.

It's vital that Christians bear fruit in their lives—the fruit of the Spirit. But what does that fruit look like? Like we have learned from the past sermons of our pastors and lessons in our Sunday School, those are mentioned in Galatians 5:22-23.  In Jesus Christ we have the perfect example of what God's Spirit should produce in our lives. He perfectly exhibited all these wonderful traits of the Holy Spirit, not only during His entire earthly ministry, but also during His arrest, trial and crucifixion. Of course, Jesus was more than just a man—He was God in the flesh. As such, He showed His disciples what can be accomplished through the power of the Holy Spirit.

LESSON OUTLINE:

1.  SHOWING THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT BY HIS LIFE

The first fruit of the Holy Spirit listed in Galatians 5 is love. Jesus' entire ministry was characterized by love. And the greatest demonstration ever of that love was the sacrifice He made for all of us. Jesus, who was a divine Being with the Father (John 1:1), sacrificed His heavenly power and glory to become a human being and subject Himself to painful humiliation, suffering and death for the sake of mankind (Philippians 2:5-11).

Jesus emphasized the fruit of love at His last meal—often referred to as "the last supper"—with the disciples. Notice His words: "As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love . . . This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends" (John 15:9-13).

Of course, these weren't mere words to Him. Jesus did lay down His life for His friends, serving as the supreme example of love.

The second listed fruit of the Holy Spirit is joy.  Amazingly, just before He suffered, instead of thinking of His own upcoming cruel suffering, He reminded His disciples that His joy would "remain in you, and that your joy may be full" (John 15:11). He told them that they would be sorrowful over His departure, but "your sorrow will be turned into joy," and that "your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you" (John 16:20-22).

This chapter concludes with Jesus reminding them that "in the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world" (John 16:33). And, after His resurrection, the first word Matthew records the resurrected Jesus as saying is "Rejoice!" (Matthew 28:9).

In spite of the terrible suffering Jesus endured for you and me, He counted it a joy to serve humanity by washing away our sins in His blood.

Jesus was also a man of peace, the next listed fruit. One of His very titles is the "Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6). He referred to this fruit of the Spirit at the last supper when He said: "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid" (John 14:27). One of the first statements to His followers after the resurrection was "Peace be unto you" (Luke 24:36; John 20:19, 21).

And, in the coming Kingdom of God on earth, over which Christ will be King of Kings, there will be no end to the peace that will characterize His glorious reign (Isaiah 9:7; Romans 14:17).

Through Jesus examples, may our prayer in our spiritual lives that the fruit of the spirit can be seen or shown in or our lives.

2.  EXHIBITING FRUIT THROUGHOUT HIS MINISTRY

The fourth fruit of the Holy Spirit as listed in Galatians 5 is longsuffering. The Greek words translated "longsuffering" also encompass the meanings of patience and endurance.

Jesus exhibited this fruit throughout His earthly ministry. The apostle Paul described an aspect of the ministry of Jesus this way: "Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting." (1 Timothy 1:16). Even while suffering a painful death by crucifixion, Jesus exhibited the patient endurance to pray for those who were tormenting and killing Him (Luke 23:34).

Gentleness, the next fruit on the list, was another hallmark of Jesus Christ's ministry. Paul noted this godly fruit as he wrote to Titus: "But when the gentleness (kindness) and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared . . . according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit" (Titus 3:4-5).

Christ's act of healing the ear of the high priest's servant Malchus even while being arrested is an incredible example of His gentleness even under very difficult circumstances! Instead of worrying about Himself and His approaching pain, He reacted with gentleness (kindness) and compassion to Malchus' injury and immediately healed his ear, making the man whole again (Luke 22:51).

The next fruit of the Holy Spirit listed is goodness. When Peter summarized the ministry of Jesus, the ministry of which he was an actual witness, he stated: "Jesus of Nazareth . . . went about doing good" (Acts 10:38). And Jesus, regarding His supreme sacrifice, referred to Himself as the good Shepherd who "gives His life for the sheep" (John 10:11).

The next fruit is faith or faithfulness. Jesus had total trust and confidence in God the Father, and He was Himself faithful to the responsibility the Father gave to Him. Even as He stated that He was in anguish due to His impending crucifixion, He resolved to stay with the plan of redemption to the very end. He summarized His mission in John 12:27: "For this purpose I came to this hour." He continues to serve His Church today as "a merciful and faithful High Priest" (Hebrews 2:17).

TAGALOG: JOHN 12:27 “Ako'y nababagabag ngayon. Sasabihin ko bang, ‘Ama, iligtas mo ako sa oras na ito?’ Hindi! Sapagkat ito ang dahilan kung bakit ako naparito.

Meekness is listed next. Jesus declared that He was "meek and lowly in heart" (Matthew 11:29). “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

Toward the end of His ministry, He came to Jerusalem on a donkey, fulfilling Zechariah's prophecy that the King would come "meek and sitting upon an ass" (Matthew 21:5). “Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.”

The last fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5 is temperance the ability to control one's behavior. Jesus, as the One to whom the Father committed judgment (John 5:22), could have called down enormous power at any time against His enemies. But instead He exercised self-control throughout His ministry.

TAGALOG: JOHN 5:22 Sapagka't ang Ama'y hindi humahatol sa kanino mang tao, kundi ipinagkaloob niya sa Anak ang buong paghatol;

One example of this is found in Matthew 26:53-54. When Peter was trying to take things into his own hands, Christ reminded Peter that if He wished, He could call in "more than twelve legions of angels"—tens of thousands—to deal with those who were abusing Him. Instead, He stayed true to His calling, exercised godly self-control and allowed Himself to be arrested and crucified.

“Hindi mo ba alam na kung hihingi ako ng tulong sa aking Ama ay papadalhan agad niya ako ng higit sa labindalawang batalyon ng mga anghel? 54 Ngunit paano matutupad ang mga Kasulatan na nagsasabing ito'y dapat mangyari?” (MATT. 26:53-54)

3.  WE SHOULD SHOW THE SAME FRUIT

Jesus Christ not only exemplified all the fruit of the Holy Spirit throughout His ministry, but He has made it possible for us to produce the same spiritual fruit as well. As His true followers, He expects us to abide in Him and bear much fruit (John 15:4, 8). Indeed, through the Holy Spirit, Jesus will live His godly way of life through us if we are yielded to Him (Galatians 2:20) our minds.

Following His example, the converted children of God will be manifesting the fruit of the Spirit

I will give examples of situations in the Bible that would help us realize that even the early Christians had struggles too:

·        2 Samuel 16: 5-13 – Shimei cursed David but he responded in the right way. What fruit of the spirit does this apply?

·        Numbers 12 - Moses, too, was described as incomparably meek. We read about it in Numbers 12. Moses is leading the nation of Israel and his older siblings launch a verbal attack against him, laced with envy, regarding his Cushite wife. During the encounter we see a stillness from Moses, in which he doesn’t defend himself instead God defended him.

Numbers 12:3 (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)

·        Job 1: 21 – He went through hard times but still he said, Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. (longsuffering)

·        Nehemiah 4 - Nehemiah went back to Jerusalem to rebuilds its walls after the exodus. While he and others were building the wall, armies from nearby came and started to attack them! Nehemiah showed self-control and didn’t fight back. Instead, he stationed some of his men to be guards while the others worked. Nehemiah knew that God would protect them. He acted calmly and with self-control

CONCLUSION:

We can't "try harder" in our attempts to be more spiritual. We can't say, "I'm going to be especially loving today so that I can demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit." That doesn't work. Instead, when we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives and transform our hearts, we naturally display the fruit of the Spirit in the same way that apples naturally grow on apple trees when they are healthy and mature.

The more we surrender ourselves to the Holy Spirit, the more we produce those characteristics that define a follower of Christ: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. We offer all of these as evidence that we are truly being transformed by God's Spirit within us.
